Normcore? What’s That?

Amanda Swank, Author

Normcore is a unisex fashion trend characterized by the deliberate use of somewhat bland and normal-looking clothing. Started back in 2016 by hipsters from Brooklyn, the concept of normcore can be a little tricky to understand. The name itself is a combo of the words “normal” and “hardcore”.

In the beginning, it was an attitude, a way of thinking. The creators of normcore used it as a way to “find liberation in being nothing special”. In other words, it is a response to the stereotypical ideas of what fashion is.

Normcore clothes include everyday items of casual wear such as t-shirts, hoodies, polos, short-sleeved shirts, jeans and chino pants, but not items such as neckties or blouses. These clothes are worn by men and women alike, making normcore a unisex style. A classic example of this would be Jerry Seinfeld.

Seinfeld’s monochrome tops and light-washed jeans are a perfect example of normcore.

What you should take away from normcore, is fashion can be comfortable! Sometimes, dressing casually can stand out!
