Over the past 20 years there has been countless innovations that improve our daily lives. Technology has changed the way we communicate, relate to one another and think about what it means to be a modern human being. The pace of innovation has been so crazy in recent years that it is hard to imagine which innovations have had the greatest impact on business and society.

Here are just 10 of those innovations:

iPhone – The iPhone was first released in 2007. Now we do basically everything from these tiny devices such as calling, texting, playing games, facetime, and even banking.

EMV Chip Cards- EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) is the proper name for “chip cards,” microchips have been added to most cards is because it prevents the card information from being stolen or reproduced.

Social Media Advancements- 2006 was a big year for Social Media. It was the year that Facebook allowed anyone over the age of 13 -not just college students with an .edu email address be users. Twitter was also launched in July of that year, and youtube just a year before that.

Tablet – The iPad was released in 2010, and now pretty much everyone makes a tablet PC.  Tablets are the bridge between smartphones and laptops.


E- Readers –Not only have e-readers changed how we receive books, they’ve changed the publishing industry.

Live and Online Streaming – Netflix introduced online streaming to personal computers as one of it’s add-on services. The next year saw the addition of streaming to Xbox 360’s, blue ray disc players, and TV set-top boxes.

Self-Driving Car– Google’s Self Driving Car project started in 2008. Google’s self driving cars are being tested on the streets of major cities across the US.

Alternative to iPhone- Android Software was also developed by Google, and the first release was in 2010, giving us an alternative to the iPhone.

Crowd-sourced Funding- Kickstarter started on April 28th, 2009 and has completely changed the way that small projects and businesses get off the ground.

Tesla Cars- The Tesla Roadster was released in 2008 and is an advancement in electric cars because it can go up to 300 miles on a single charge.

These innovations from the last 20 years have changed society in significant ways. Most of these innovations make completing task easier and spreading information way faster than it was 20 years ago.
