How Tumblr was Created

Tumblr was created on February 1st, 2007 after years of development by David Karp.  Tumblr is a smaller form of blogging based off of ‘tumblelogging’ which was invented by German high school student Chris Neukirchen.  His site called Anarchaia inspired two Americans named Marcel Molina and Sam Stephenson to create The Projectionist.  The Projectionist had the visual style inspiration for David Karp.  He combined the two sites and invented Tumblr.

The evolution of Tumblr started on February 1st, 2009 when the dashboard was added.  This attracted many more people to the site.  With the dashboard, users could post whenever they wanted.  By July 1st, 2009, Tumblr had acquired 50 million views per month.  There were 6 posts every second and 2 reblogs every second and a half.  Along with that, every day Tumblr got 5,000 new users.  July 30th of 2009, Tumblr made an add deal with Adidas.  With big companies wanting to be featured, Tumblr was bringing in more money.  On May 1st, 2013, Yahoo bought Tumblr.  At this point, Tumblr has reached 1 million users a day with 90 million posts to follow along with that.  November 1st, 2015, Tumblr had over 261 million blogs and over 123 billion posts.  November 10th, 2015, Tumblr launched instant messaging.  With this, users could privately talk to one another.

As of December 2018, Tumblr banned adult content. it was meant for the greater good of society.  This ban of adult content quickly began to not go well with its users.  Some users began to claim that some of their posts, which were not inappropriate, were flagged.

It will be interesting to see how Tumblr evolves over the next 10 years.
